Scout trials

Interested in starting your child with Scouts, but not sure if it’s for them?

We warmly invite you to bring your child along to their age section night for three weeks, before deciding if it is for them. Let them dive into the adventure, discover new friendships, and explore the world of Scouting.

To start your three-week trial, please email us with your child’s name and date of birth, and we can let you know which night would be right for them and when best to start the trial.

During the trial your child can attend any of the nights that are scheduled to take place in our hall. We meet only during school terms.

* Unfortunately, we won’t be able to take your child on any excursions or outdoor activities scheduled at that time, as they won’t be covered by the insurance. But we will let you know in advance when a good time would be for your trial to start.

How to join

YES! Sign me up!

If your child is ready to join Scouts, we will send you an ‘invitation to join’, together with an invoice for the membership fees.

Once you have completed the requested information form and have paid the fees, we will arrange a time to have a special ceremony where your child will be invested and make their promise.

* Please note, if your 5 year old is not quite ready to independently participate in the group activities, the Joey Leader may recommend waiting a bit longer before joining if needed. In this case, your child is welcome to have another trial the following term.

Membership fees

How much does it cost?

Family expenses include the annual group fee, term-based section fees, and a one-time purchase of the Scout shirt. Read on for more details about each.

Annual group fee

Annual group fee for 2025 is $450. It includes the following:

  • Scouts Victoria branch fee ($268)
  • Casey District fee ($15)
  • Content insurance ($15)
  • Hall running costs for the year ($152)

The Scout financial year runs from April to March each year. For members who join part way through the year, the fees are levied on a pro-rata basis. We will calculate it for you when you enquire.

At NWSG we believe that financial issues should not be a barrier to any child being a Scout. If you have any concerns, please speak with your Group Leader to discuss payment options.

Term-based section fees

In addition to the annual group fee, your section (i.e. Joyes, Cubs or Scouts) will collect $20 each term (x4) to spend on weekly section activities, food and the purchase of consumables and badges.

Camps and some excursions would require a small additional payment.

Scout shirt

Parents would also need to purchase a Scout shirt for their child. Scout shirts are available:

  • either online via the Scout Shop website
  • or from the Snowgum Factory Outlet store
1702 Dandenong Road, Oakleigh East, VIC 3166

Each section has a different colour, Joeys – Tan, Cubs – Yellow and Scouts – Green.

The scarf and the woggle (the thing that holds the scarf together) will be provided by our group at the time of investiture.

Investiture

A special ceremony to welcome new members

The Investiture Ceremony is a special event where the youth officially becomes a member of the Scouting family. Family members are warmly invited to come and support their child.

During the ceremony, the youth will give their Scout Promise (one of two available options), agree to adhere to the Australian Scout Law, and will be issued with initial badges and a scarf.
